His own laptop has been dying a slow and excruciating death right before his eyes, and one of these days he knew it will be the end for it, and he probably won't get any warning when it happens. The problem with eBay is that one has to trust what people tell about the product they're selling is true, like that the computer hasn't been dropped or damaged in a way that could come back to haunt one once he has purchased it and had it for a while. Sites like eBay are great for lots of different things, and finding laptop deals was relatively easy. Most times when people are selling their laptop it's so that they can upgrade to a better model and they know they won't get back the money that they spent on the machine. In some cases, it can be better to buy a used laptop from an individual. He also found lots of laptops and computer hardware that had been reconditioned, and that means that a new machine has been created out of parts of old ones. Sometimes you can get good laptop deals this way, but generally you're going to have to pay for the labor involved in creating the new machine. The best thing he could do when looking to replace his laptop was just to figure out exactly what he needed in a machine and then look around on the Internet for good laptop deals on the specifics he required. He eventually got a great deal on a used HP and he was able to buy it before his laptop broke down on him. He has planned that he would sell his old laptop on eBay and see what he would get for it.
